Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of biocide tolerance and resistance to antibiotics and heavy metals in bacteria isolated from seafoods. A collection of 87 strains were selected from different seafood samples. Most of the strains were Gram-negative bacilli. A subset of strains were selected for further study according to their antibiotic resistance and biocide tolerance profiles. These strains were identified by 16S rDNA sequencing and tested for the presence of genetic determinants related to biocide tolerance, antibiotic resistance and metal tolerance. The results suggest that the use of biocides may facilitate coselection of antibiotic and metal resistances. The bacterial diversity of solid surfaces in contact with air in a tilapia farm was also studied in order to assess the safety of fish production process.
