Abstract

This article describes the resources –graphic, narrative and thematic– used by cartoonist Antonio Mingote when he adapted El malvado Carabel to the graphic novel format for its publication in the satirical magazine La Codorniz. It also analyzes the influence exerted on the characterization of its protagonist by another graphic series published some time earlier by the same magazine, which Mingote entitled Aventuras del novel enmascarado, whose hero was an unknown writer who tried to get literary fame by any means and with no success. The article provides some information about the contribution Rafael Azcona –a cartoonist himself, a writer, and a recognized screenwriter– to his friend’s work as a letterer. In fact, Azcona’s novel El pisito has some affinities with El malvado Carabel in its dramaturgical structure. Finally, the article underlines the admiration that both Azcona and Mingote felt for Wenceslao Fernández Flórez, not only as a writer, but also in what concerns his view of life and his humour, which does not exclude, but rather intensifies, disheartenment and pesimism before human relations, always oscillating between kafkian and quixotesque coordinates.
