Resumo

In this paper, we propose a comparative analysis between Los Tellos de Meneses, first part, written by Lope de Vega, and its rewritten homonymous version, by Bretón de los Herreros. Firstly, we will place the first stage of Bretón’s dramatic career and his plays rewritten from baroque texts in the context of theatrical debates from the last decades of 18th century. Then, we will offer bibliographic and scenic data about both plays. Secondly, we will comment the writing process of regularization made by Bretón, as he adapts Lope’s play to the three classical unities, and therefore changes some aspects of the plot in order to strengthen its verisimilitude. Thirdly, and at last, we will point the relevance of these texts, and the rest of Bretón’s plays rewritten from baroque texts, as an example of the ongoing inclusion of baroque drama in Spanish literary canon.
