Abstract
Bretón de los Herreros versioned several plays by Calderón de la Barca, the first of them was La carcelera de sí misma (1826), originally titled Peor está que estaba (1636). Breton, a respectful Calderonian text adapter, maintains the original plot, as well as the virtually identical structural development. However, from the significant change in the title to the qualification of some characters, especially the protagonist, Lisarda, the nineteenth-century playwright, transforms the baroque comedy into a play that brings a touch of modernity very much in line with the society for which it recast the baroque text.
