Abstract

The acquisition of habitual and healthy leisure physical-sport activities requires previous education that can be seen in the confluence of formal, non-formal and informal education. The purpose of this research is the discovery and assessment of how physical activity and sport manifest themselves within the realm of leisure for students at the mandatory high school level, investigating the behaviours, attitudes and motivations towards this type of leisure, from the perspective of the adolescents themselves, as well as those of their parents and professors. With this goal, quantitative techniques, such as the analysis of descriptive and inferential analysis of variables, utilizing a questionnaire in a study of 1,978 students in secondary school, and qualitative techniques, such as content analysis of four discussion groups have been employed. The results reveal that eight out of ten students currently participate in physical activities in their free time, this behaviour being closely related to the importance given it by the parents, the friends and also age of initiation. In addition, it is revealed how the improvement of the health is one of the most relevant motives for the maintenance in the physical sport activity. As the most notable conclusion it is emphasized that among adolescents there exists a culture of physical activity during leisure time, given that almost all adolescents have had contact with the practice of physical activity and manifest a positive attitude towards a physically active lifestyle.
