Abstract

This article explores the mechanisms by which firms are interdependent in their intrafirm diffusion processes. We argue that intrafirm diffusion is strictly different to first adoption in terms of the mechanism by which other firms influence the process. Instead of the dominant epidemic diffusion theories, we propose an alternative one based on competitive interaction. According to it, technology deployment by rivals increases the intrafirm diffusion incentive by raising competitive pressures, but also reduces the incentive by lowering the expected profitability of the technology. We test our propositions by analyzing the diffusion of the Automated Teller Machine among the Spanish savings banks between 1986 and 2004
