Los tres libros del Orlando enamorado de Matteo María Boiardo, traducidos por Francisco Garrido de Villena, Valencia, 1555

Abstract

This doctoral thesis presents the edition of the first Spanish translation of the Italian epicchivalry poem, Orlando innamorato, composed by Matteo Maria Boiardo in the last third of the Fifth Century. This translation was done by the knight Francisco Garrido de Villena in the first half of the Sixteen Century and printed three times: the first one in Valencia: 1555, that corresponds to this edition; the second one in Alcalá de Henares: 1577; and the last one in Toledo: 1581. The poem edition constructed in three books, which includes philological notes, puts up to date its spelling to make easy its comprehension. Besides, it comes preceded by an introductory study in which its structural characteristics has been analysed with respect to the Italian opera —its differences and its similarities—; the different adaptation’s levels made by the translator according to the literary tendency of the chivalry Castilian poems, apart from a literary, social and historic context analysis not only about the translator but the Valencian printer as well.
