Resumen

Two hundred and twenty-nine enterococcal strains were studied to evaluate the influence of culture media and screening methods for detection of different levels of vancomycin resistance. Mueller-Hinton or Brain-Heart Infusion agar plates containing a concentration of 4 μg/ml of vancomycin with an inoculum of 104 cfu/spot reliably detected intermediate or resistant enterococcal isolates. Intermediate strain detection by disk diffusion tests in Mueller-Hinton agar was suboptimal; the use of Brain-Heart Infusion agar erroneously categorized as intermediate 40% of the susceptible strains.
