Training in control engineering requires laboratory practice, where the use of portable, pocket-sized equipment favours autonomous and remote learning at low cost. In this context, an improved version of the Temperature Control Lab is presented.By modifying the power transistors, the charger is no longer required and the unit is simply connected directly to the USB A port of the computer. In addition, the reduced mass of the power element halves the time constant of the thermal system, allowing faster experiments for both identification and feedback control exercises. In this area, the switch to PNP transistor technology allows nested current loops. Finally, a voltage reference is incorporated to reduce the measurement noise from the power supply by ninety percent. The end result is significant cost savings, ease of manufacture and increased portability and flexibility of use.
