Zusammenfassung

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that the Galba of the Tacitus’ Histories is a veiled criticism of Nerva, especially regarding his advanced age. The way in which both emperors came to power, together with their prestigious origin, their advanced age and the lack of descendants were enough elements for Tacitus’s readers to see Nerva in Galba. On the other hand, the speech that Tacitus attributes to Galba on the occasion of Piso’s adoption also shows this link between Galba and Nerva. It is evident that Tacitus refers to another process of adoption, which is closer to him and his readers: the adoption of Trajan by Nerva.
