Resumo

This study aims to identify the key factors for the incorporation of retail trade in thedevelopment of the circular economy, addressing research through semi-structuredinterviews with 28 key informants from Spain. The main results highlight the emergenceof opportunities such as new businesses, environmental and economic benefits, whilepolitical, cultural, technological, financial aspects and consumer ignorance stand asbarriers. The relevance of this sector in raising awareness among the final consumer,promoting sustainable products, in addition to its contribution to the supply chain/ reverse logistics, facilitating recycling and providing a business model focused on circulareconomy is highlighted. In turn, five necessary policy measures and instruments wereidentified to address the barriers and the importance of social agents for the transitionto a circular economy was denoted. As a result of this work, new lines of future researchare opened.
