Abstract
La Rioja (Spain) has an extensive and diverse palentological record. This is especially extraordinary in the case of the dinosaur ichnites (of a quality and quantity that is uncommon in other regions of the world), which is complemented by the presence of skeletal remains, with a great preservation, and of which important deposits have been discovered in recent years. The dinosaur fossil record from the Early Cretaceous of La Rioja shows that a wide diversity of different species lived together in this region in the past, with the presence of theropods, ornithopods and sauropods. The rich paleontological heritage of La Rioja, and this of dinosaurs, responds to a series of paleoclimatic, paleogeographic and geological conditions, the combination of which has allowed this entire legacy to reach our days. Various research groups and centres have highlighted and maintained this paleontological heritage in La Rioja. Currently, researchers from the Cátedra de Paleontología at the Universidad de La Rioja, the Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU), and the paleontological centers of Igea and Enciso, in collaboration with other institutions at national and regional level, are working together to understand, preserve and disseminate this paleontological heritage, a source of scientific, economic, patrimonial and social wealth for the region.
