Global warming and hydrocarbon dependency have force Europe and other parts of the world to consider decarbonization strategies. Among the tools to boost this decarbonization, development and use of renewable energies is key, with the wind energy being significant in the Spanish energy mix. One of the challenges arising in relation to the wind solution is the concentration of the generation, which may lead to the overflow of the current through the power lines. This is the point where dynamic thermal rating becomes interesting. This thesis includes the development of several prototypes with the aim of taking the advantage of the new smart grids to improve the deployment of real time dynamic thermal rating on distribution lines. Moreover, the document explores some of the alternatives to operate the system in case of temporal lack of the weather data needed for the continuing calculus of the maximum capacity of the line.
