Resumen

The main objective of the present article is to analyze the reasons that led the Spanish Government in 2001 to take and implement the decision to allow foreign recruits into the Spanish armed forces. Its authors also examine the successive modifications that have been applied since then to the initial plan, and the impact that the entry of foreigners has had on Spain’s all-volunteer force as a whole. The topic recommends itself as, with the exception of a handful of publications, it has hardly been researched to date, in Spain or elsewhere.
