Abstract

The educational system plays an essential role in the socialization of people and, to such an extent, in the development of democratic principles among which equality is more and more important in today's societies. Under this premise, the doctoral research underlying these pages analyses the relationship between the educational system and gender in the socialization process and the role of Social Work in formal education for the achievement of more equal societies. A historical journey allows us to build the theoretical foundations that underpin the key concepts of equality, education and feminism. Based on the French Revolution as the genesis of the principle of equality and the feminist movement, the relationship between the principle of equality and the right to education is analyzed, as well as the evolution of gender theories as the conceptual core of the inclusive school model. The empirical work of doctoral research examines the socialization of primary school students in La Rioja (Spain) based on the gender variables, academic course and characteristics of schools. After defining the methodology and information collection tool used, the data is analyzed using Simple Correspondence Analysis (SCA) and Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) tests. The association between the gender and the age of the student with the questions asked are key variables in the process of gender socialization for the sample studied. The final conclusions analyze the data drawn within the theoretical framework of reference and develop a proposal to include Social Work in educational institutions from a gender perspective, as a scientific discipline that can play an essential role in transforming schools into more inclusive spaces.
