Resumo

Pruning is the most important activity during the dormant season in vineyards. The main objective of pruning is to allow adequate vegetative growth for the following season and to obtain maximum yields of high-quality grapes. Pruning wounds are also the main port of entry into grapevine for fungi associated with grapevine trunk diseases (GTD). Adequate pruning practices include several concepts to consider such as of pruning cut performance, the use and selection of pruning tools, training systems, timing and type of pruning, wound protection and removal of potential sources of inoculum of GTD fungi. In this review, we give an overview about the current knowledge on pruning practices and GTD fungal pathogens infection based on relevant literature published in Spain and abroad over the last few years. Finally, we consider some of the future prospects in this topic.
