Abstract

The Church lived as part of Spanish society the consequences of the Revolution of 1820. But due to its own political, economic and socio-cultural characteristics, it was a key piece to understand the Triennium policy based on the liberalism-absolutism axis. In the case of La Rioja, the fact of containing the diocesan headquarters of the episcopate of Calahorra and La Calzada allows us to analyze the role played by the ecclesial hierarchy and the clergy under its control, during this this important stage of the first liberalism into the reign of Fernando VII. Likewise, the interpretation of the Riojan clergy during the Triennium must incorpórate, as a complement to the diocesan clergy, the position held by other Riojan ecclesiastics from outside the episcopate. Because, as can be inferred from the analysis of its ideas and acts, the Riojan Church chose, like the rest of society, between constitutionalism or absolutism.
