Abstract

The dissertation, taking the Bestiario of Juan José Arreola as the origin of a coordinate system, in which the vertical axis is the tradition of the bestiary and the horizontal represent those contempory bestiaries, aims to research the picture of the writings about animals in Hispano-American literature y find out where is Arreola located. After demonstrating the uniqueness of the Bestiario of Arreola, the study focuses on its relationship within the works starred by animals of Borges, Cortázar and Monterroso. By investigating the affinities and differrences that have these authors, the dissertation studies how do they combine the tradition and the modernity in their writings in a special way, and it turns out to be a work which helps to have a better understanding of the Hispano-American literature of the twentieth century with regard to the animals and the animality
