Resumen
English as a Foreign Language (EFL) curricula aim to develop learners’ proficiency to interact successfully in English in various communicative and social contexts. Thus, vocabulary and cultural knowledge become crucial in foreign language learning, as speakers should be able to understand linguistic and cultural differences (Byram 1997), as well as cultural conceptualisations (Sharifian 2003, 2013). However, as previous research has stated, cultural vocabulary is scarcely represented in ELT materials (Mahmood 2012; Canga Alonso & Cifone Ponte 2015; Cifone Ponte 2019). This chapter will present a framework for the teaching of cultural vocabulary at A1–A2 levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference (2001). Our final goal is to endow teachers and beginner EFL learners with the tools and resources necessary to enhance cultural vocabulary instruction.
