Abstract

The high rates of university absenteeism are a growing concern among university managers, teachers, politicians and society in general and have become a problem both educational, social, economic and personal. This paper analyzes the causes that can explain the absenteeism of university students. In addition to analyzing what factors, both personal, as well as those of the professors, of the university and of the environment, affect university absenteeism, we have studied which variables are able to explain the different absenteeism figures according to gender. Our results show that the factors that explain university absenteeism are students' own factors, such as lack of commitment, self-confidence or lack of financial needs. On the other hand, the results show that women are more willing to attend class than men. The factors that explain this difference to a greater extent are the greater commitment to their studies and the less importance they give to their social life during the teaching period
