Resumen

Several authors have talked about the need for the implementation in the Spanish health system of quality management systems as a tool to improve their sustainability. The recently experienced economic crisis has subjected organizations to a crash-test, which has been tackled from various positions and using different tools, albeit with the common need to seek efficiency and decrease of expenditure. The objective of this research was to describe the impact of the European model of excellence (EFQM) on the sustainability of health organizations. For this, a qualitative study was carried out, establishing a comparison between two different organizations with different degrees of implementation of the European model. The methodology chosen was the case method. For this study we interviewed people from the two selected organizations. The results show that the implementation of the EFQM model has helped produce a cultural change in the organization that has worked with it and has introduced the fundamental concepts of excellence in the discourse of people, favoring their orien-tation towards sustainability. In addition, in both organizations studied, despite the organizational and cultural differences between the two, the need to give nurses an important role in the future of the sustainability of health organizations has emerged prominently
