Abstract

Clerus mutillarius Fabricius, 1775 (Coleoptera: Cleridae) is a "bi-typic" species distributed throughout central and southern Europe plus North Africa. Based on the most recent findings and interpretation, it is the subspecies C. m. africanus Kocher, 1955 the one occurring in the Iberian Peninsula. In this paper we bring to light the occurrence of the nominal subspecies C. m. mutillarius Fabricius, 1775 at least in a zone of the very north of that Peninsula: northern Navarre region. The study of the elytral chromatic variability of Clerus Geoffroy, 1762 individuals from several localities of La Rioja and Navarre supports the existence of a hybrid contact zone crossing east-west north Navarre, coupled to the Eurosiberian-Mediterranean boundary. The chromatic bimodality observed in some likely clinal localities, the very probably aposematic colour patterns involved and the existence of other examples of vicariant species-pairs on both sides of the ecotone associated to that boundary, arise the hypothesis of C. m. africanus and C. m. mutillarius to be true species.
