Abstract

In recent years, public spaces have undergone processes of urban renewal policies. At local government level, these policies are related to strategies of economic valuation of monumental buildings, with de goal of transforming them into patrimonial icons. In the case of the walled complex of Pamplona-Iruña, that includes the ancient city-fortress surrounded by a green park, it is possible to appreciate a clear commitment to make of it a tourist attraction and, at the same time, an institutional reference of social memory and local identity. However, we see how the meanings given to this urban element go beyond mere exercise of institutional patrimonialization, becoming an issue of and in dispute regarding the ways in which it is used and, in particular, to the ways in which it is defined and it is evoked.
