Abstract

The main aim of this work is to show, in as a self-contained way as possible, a contribution to a classic problem of Mathematics: the numerical solution of nonlinear equations using iterative processes. This paper is authored by members of the PRIENOL research group based at the University of La Rioja. We have chosen Newton’s method as the iterative process of reference to solve the problem, and to introduce the most important concepts involved in its study (convergence, operational cost, efficiency, etc.), as well. Then, we give account of some of the results obtained for other iterative processes also related to Newton’s method. Finally, we discuss some applications of the methods to specific problems.
