Resumen

Vineyards landscapes express the special relationships among the natural, historical, functional and cultural aspects of the country and society that has managed them for generations. In this work we present the main features and landscape dynamics of Rioja vineyard, which has experienced very rapid changes since the eighties of the last century. The Rioja vineyard is located in the Ebro Depression and in the “somontanos” of the Iberian and the Cantabrian Mountains. It is characterized by small plots and young vines dominated by trellis arbors and red varieties, especially the tempranillo. The increase in the Rioja wine market and the improvement in the communications prompted the change of a highly fragmented landscape, requiring large amounts of work, to a more homogeneous and in profitable one, with changes in the plantation and tillage systems. In recent times the enotourism has added to the traditional visit to the winery, the knowledge of the vineyard landscape and the work of the vineyard, and it has become an important economic resource for viticulture
