Abstract
Manuel Breton de los Herreros’s reputation is bound to his theatrical productions. Considering that he has abandoned this genre, the critics have not considered his other work seriously: his poetry is less known than his comic work and has been criticized because formal aspects take priority. In any case, Breton’s verses present a series of parallels with the genres of Greek and Latin: he recreates, with some necessary adaptions, classic texts, and in others, an affinity perfect to the structure of the originals. This article illustrates the presence of seven classic genres of literature in La Rioja and one of the most representative authors of poetry that creates a rich and complex intertextual view that lets him define his own poetic, lyrical and satirical universe.
