Abstract

Becoming patron in the Early Modem Age was a goal sought by the nobility and local oligarchies. In that aim, convents and monasteries were very prestigious. Usually their patronage was a consequence of their foundation, but there were also other alternative ways that allowed the powerful people to get one or more patronages over convents. This article analyses that less known process, and tries to explain it both from the point of view of the religious orders and from the perspective of the aristocrats and oligarchies.
