Resumen

Landscape changes in Rioja vineyards since 2000 are analysed in this paper. The Common Organisation of the Markets (COM) in 1999 and 2008 have promoted the conversion and restructuring of vineyard encouraging grubbing-up of vines, the expansion of new vineyards in irrigated areas, and the vines grown on trellis system. Such changes are not adequately reflected in statistics, by not including space heterogeneity. Digital cartography focusing on land uses and land cover and, in addition, capable of analysing landscape structure as well as the size and the shape of fragments, is regarded as necessary. Counting on accurate and objective scientific studies on vineyard landscape is recently seen as an interesting topic, since wine tourism is especially significant in vineyard territories socioeconomy.
