Resumen

This paper aims at analyzing, through a survey of the organizational culture and the style of leadership, which factors explain the success or the discontinuity of the companies. The study was characterized as an explanatory and descriptive investigation, with qualitative focus and case study method. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and direct observation. The study consisted of four family businesses of the clothing retail business, of Toledo (Brasil), with an average life between 16 and 40 years old. The data were analyzed and compared between categories of variables and indicators. The contact with the business practices made it possible to identify aspects of the leadership styles and the organizational culture that lead to success, stagnation or disappearance of family businesses. The research also contributed to the creation of tools of a management model in family businesses.
