Resumen

The aim of this study was to evaluate biocide and antibiotic sensitivity in bacteria isolated from organic foods, and the simultaneous antibiotic resistance and biocide tolerance. Resistance determinants were investigated in double resistant strains. Finally, synergistic interactions between antibiotics and biocides were investigated . The results obtained suggest that organic foods may act as reservoirs for antibiotic-resistant, biocide-tolerant bacteria, in which efflux pumps seem to be the most abundant determinants of antimicrobial resistance. We have also found remarkable synergistic effects between different biocides and antibiotics against resistant isolates. The fact that antibiotic resistance can be overcome when antibiotics are used in combination with biocides at sub-inhibitory concentrations opens new possibilities for controlling antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
