Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the succession process from an integrated perspective, taking into account all factors that can influence this process. In addition, it was intended to identify which are the main variables that influence the success in the succession of the family business and what is the relative importance of each of these variables, and see if the variables and their importance in the success of the succession is maintained regardless the type of the family business analyzed. It is believed that the success or failure of the process of succession of a family business can not be explained solely in terms of the benefits obtained, however, it must also take into account subjective elements. On the other hand, to understand why occurs or not the success in succession, it is necessary to take into account the type of family business analyzed. This is a reference element which is part of the core of the investigation. Results allowed the identification of groups for different companies, as well as the factors and the importance that each of them has for explaining the success of the succession of different typologies of companies. We came to the conclusion that the success of succession should not be measured only by objective factors, but, taking into consideration also the subjective criteria, thus interpersonal relationships among family members can influence in a significant way in the company's survival. Therefore, the succession will succeed when behind the succession process, the positive family relationships have not been impaired which has remained family harmony.
