Abstract

The climate change that is affecting the world has led us to re?evaluate new energy alternatives, because our consumption of thermal and electrical energy comes mostly from burning fossil fuels. However, a detailed study of the social, environmental and economic effects of the application of energy based on fossil fuels and renewables must be developed, so finding the right formula for the sustainable use of energy. Especially in the case of Mexico, where the generation of electricity comes mostly from fossil fuel consumption, the advantages and disadvantages for the use of renewable energy and fossil fuels, in other words: an analysis of externalities, should be analysed. When the environmental, social and economical costs od the use of fossil fuels are quantified, it can be realized that in medium and long term we pay a high price, causing serious damage to the health and development of mankind. Currently mechanisms to encourage renewable energy in Mexico are being developed, but the efforts are not enough, and a poor planning can lead to an increase in negative externalities or a failure in the promotion of renewable energies. The aim of the research is to generate a document and a methodology for evaluating externalities in the use of renewable energy in order to find a viable mechanism that may lead to encourage the use of renewable energy over fossil fuels and the use of sustainable energy in Mexico.
