Abstract

This dissertation is focused in the photo- and electrochemical behaviour of vinyl iodides. The objectives of this work are summarized in chapter 3 after a brief introduction (chapter 1) and an overview of previous work in photochemistry of C-X bond in vinyl halides. In chapter 4, the stereoselective synthesis and the reactivity in intramolecular photocyclization of many vinyl halides are described, obtaining several polycarbocycles and polyheterocycles. The photoreactivity mechanism of the vinyl iodides is studied by experimental methods such as quenching experiments, quantum yield determination, luminescence measurement and ion or radical trapping. In chapter 5, a brief overview of the electrochemical behaviour of C-X bond in haloalkenes is shown. The mechanism of electrochemical C-I bond cleavage is studied employing two different experimental techniques such as cyclic voltammetry and electrolysis. In chapter 6, the photochemical behaviour of iodoenaminones and its role in intermolecular substitutions are reported, procuring the formation of bonds with different atoms (Se, Br and S). The ability of seleno- and thioenaminones derived from cyclohexenone to act as sunscreens is examined as well. The conclusions of the dissertation are summarized in chapter 7. In chapter 8, material and methods employed in mechanistic and experimental studies are detailed.
