Abstract

This paper is an introductory analysis to the challenges that universities have in the new information society. We start with a brief definition of the new environment, underlying the critical role of knowledge in the new society. That situation challenge universities, as the traditional place where knowledge was created and transferred. Within this new situation, university mission is analyzed taking into consideration social demands. Information society challenges are not only about technology,but also about suitable development, equity of access, sharing knowledge, etc. We would like to underline that this paper is an introductory framework to see the "big picture" situation. From this situation, our aim is to go deeper in the analysis and to study several cases to obtain conclusions about how universities are getting transformed
