Resumen

We analyse the influence of a plane metal surface to the energy spectrum of Rydberg atoms using electrostatic image model. Although the system is nonintegrable, we have found that for large values of atom-surface distances classical motion is close to regular and the phase space is separated into the regions of vibrational and rotational motions. At smaller distances there appear highly chaotic trajectories. The energy level shifts are calculated in aproximation of the instantaneous van der Waals interaction, as well as using fourth-order expasion of the potential. The comparison with the quantum-mechanical calculations shows that the energy levels structure is well explained in the framework of the classical mechanics.
