Resumen

A study has been conducted in first-course subjects of scientific and technical university degrees in order to analyse the student-related factors that may affect the success of the learning process in a non-native language. For that purpose, the English level of some Spanish students has been determined, as well as several variables concerning both academic factors and the language itself: their language learning background, their habitual practice of English, their opinion about its necessity and importance for professional development, their attitude towards studying a university degree in a non-native language, etc. With the aim of analysing the effect of the language on the results, a part of each of the five subjects that have been involved in the study was taught in English. Those contents were evaluated together with the parts lectured in Spanish. The most interesting conclusions concern the difference between the results obtained in both parts, as well as the mark obtained in the English part by students who prove to have reached an acceptable knowledge of the subject by passing the Spanish part. In addition, the statistical processing of data allows drawing conclusions connecting both types of results with the aforementioned factors related to the circumstances of the students concerning the English language.
