A method to separate and identify manufacturing residual products (MRPs) in commercial formulations of chlorpyrifos is presented. The method is based on 3 stages: (1) qualitative study by capillary gas chromatography, (2) separation by liquid chromatography, and (3) identification by mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Using this methodology, the authors identified different MRPs in commercial chlorpyrifos: a phosphorochloridothioic acid O,O-diethyl ester chloride, TCP (3,5,6-trichloropyridin-2-ol), and sulfotep (tetraethyl dithionopyrophosphate). In addition, a compound that has not been described until now, was identified. Given the name "Romerales," the compound has toxicity similar to or greater than that of chlorpyrifos.
