In this contribution, we will review the synthesis, photophysical properties and applications of several families of compounds based on the green fluorescent protein (GFP) chromophore. Different synthetic routes leading to diverse modifications of the GFP chromophore will be presented. Then, the analysis of their photophysical and photochemical properties, including photoswitching and emission, will be performed. Finally, some selected applications in medicine, biology and chemistry of these families of compounds will be discussed. © 2013, Societa Chimica Italiana.
