The torque generated by a switched reluctance motor (SRM) is bound to the variation of the flux linkage by each of its phases. Consequently, the arrangement of the coils in the stator and the polarity by which they are excited determines the characteristics of the output torque. A systematic set of 3D-FE simulations and experimental tests demonstrated that the torque is dependent on the number of coils that constitute a phase, its position, and the polarity of its excitation. Those results were confirmed by experimental tests performed on a prototype 24/18-type motor, which was designed for use as a direct drive connected to the shaft of a domestic washing machine. © 2006 IEEE.
