Resumen

Spain has a very old viticulture history, and it is the country with the largest vineyard surface in the world. This chapter reviews the grapevine genetic improvement efforts made in Spain, which have mainly followed two alternative routes, depending on the grape use. Wine varieties have been improved through clonal selection, while there is an active programme for the breeding of new table grape varieties. This chapter also presents the history and current status of clonal selection and breeding in Spain, with outstanding examples of active programmes in both fields. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved.
