Resumen

The genus Vitis contains more than 60 species with Vitis vinifera as the most renowned domesticated one. More than 5000 V. vinifera cultivars are available. These, together with fertile interspecific hybrids obtained by crossing, provide a reservoir for genotypes performing better under environmental stress. Aiming the management of the grapevine germplasm to cope with stress, Vitis species with special emphasis on V. vinifera cultivars are being characterized for the performance under the main environmental challenges, namely abiotic stress by extreme temperature, light and UV radiation, drought, salinity and nutritional deficits. Due to concerns on the environmental impact of fungicides and fertilizers, on the problem of water scarcity, as well as on the impact of climate change on grape production, characterizing and exploiting grapevine genetic resources is essential for a sustainable viticulture. Breeding strategies and tolerance genetic source possibilities to face with abiotic stress in viticulture are presented and discussed. © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
