Abstract

The acquisition of skills for the promotion of personal autonomy, such as tying shoelaces is essential for children with special educational needs. Within the observational methodology, a study was carried out with the following objectives: 1) To design an observation instrument that allows for the analysis of the behaviour displayed in the skill of tying shoelaces. 2) To elaborate an intervention proposal so that participants can tie their shoelaces based on their previous skills. 3) To evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention proposal based on the detection of the motor patterns developed by the participants. The intervention was carried out with three students from a classroom of a Special Education Centre. Prior to the intervention proposal, each participant was filmed (two observation sessions per participant), in order to determine the pre-existing motor patterns with respect to the ability to tie shoelaces. The observations made confirmed the impossibility of three pupils to tie their shoes. The observation sessions were recorded using Lince software. The reliability of the records was calculated intra-observer, by means of Cohen's Kappa coefficient using the GSEQ programme. The recordings obtained from the observation instrument designed make it possible to capture the participant's behaviour when tying the shoelaces. The detection of regular structures of behaviour (T-patterns) has made it possible to characterise the automatisms of the children in the development of the skill, establishing the starting point of the students with regard to the execution of the skill and making it possible to evaluate the efficacy of the intervention proposal.
