Abstract

Reading is one of the most fundamental formative and leisure activities for human development, and significant resources are allocated to its promotion by governments and educational authorities. However, research on reading habits in Spain yields disparate and fragmented results, often limited to specific municipalities and cities, with little geographical representation. Furthermore, post-study evaluations that assess the strengths and weaknesses of such research, with the aim of designing educational interventions to foster reading habits among students, are not consistently conducted. This doctoral research project, structured as a compilation of papers, proposes a quantitative and descriptive statistical study of reading habits within the autonomous community of La Rioja, focusing on students at the Universidad de La Rioja. The study aims to establish a theoretical and procedural framework for similar scientific investigations that can be adapted to other regions in Spain, each with its own unique socio-economic, educational, and cultural characteristics. Based on the findings of this exploration, initiatives will be designed to improve the reading habits of students in the Primary Education degree program through reading promotion activities. These initiatives will also serve to test the viability of the data collection instrument (survey) as a tool for demonstrating the effectiveness of such interventions.
