Resumen

John Turner (1927) sostiene una visión creadora y abierta de la vivienda autoconstruida. La vivienda la hacen los usuarios a lo largo del tiempo, un proceso abierto y progresivo donde los habitantes modelan creativamente sus casas. La experiencia de Turner en países en desarrollo como Perú, ha sido habitualmente contemplada como pionera de la autoconstrucción auxiliada (aided self-help). En realidad, el uso de la autoconstrucción en operaciones promovidas oficialmente no era en absoluto nuevo, como muchas veces se ha tendido a creer. En este texto se argumenta que la figura de Geddes no fue sólo esencial para iniciar al propio Turner en la vivienda progresiva autoconstruida. Fue también crucial para situar su filosofía de la vivienda y su concepción de las relaciones espacio-sociedad.
