Abstract

Background: The neonate�s foot is a structure in formation process that could be susceptible to present pathologies from birth. The clinical evidence about newborn�s foot clinodactyly is limited. The aim of this study is to know their prevalence and their relation with pregnancy and neonatal factors. Material and Methods: On a sample of 305 newborn subjects (147 males and 158 females) the most frequently podiatric diseases with congenital and hereditary component were evaluated. Statistic relations were studied between the differents neonatal anthropometrical, pregnancy and ethnical factors. Results: Sex has no statistic relation with the founded podiatric pathology. Foot Clinodactyly were present in the 80% of 5th studied toes. Foetal delivery position and forefoot width conditioned the apparition of clinodactyly in the 4th and 5th toe. It has been proved the anthropometric differences between males and females. Conclusion: Foot clinodactyly are podiatric alterations that must be taken consideration from birth. Anthropometrical values like weight and newborn forefoot width have an important role in foot clinodactyly. The prevalence of podiatric pathology in independent from race and sex in this sample.
