Resumen

The purpose of this study is to calculate the direct costs that congestive heart failure (CHF) represents for the health system in Spain for one year. As direct data on prevalence were not found, figures were estimated from those published for other comparable countries and from experts opinions, in 3 per thousand. The annual cost of attending to a CHF patient was obtained by taking into account the distribution in classes of disease and the different types of health care (ie. out-patient, hospital, which could be either in Internal Medicine or Cardiology). The final cost of the average patient ranges from 555.000 to 70.000 pesetas per year with extreme values of 272.000 and 1.847.000 pesetas. Of this cost, 10% corresponds to drugs and 87% to hospital care. For the period of reference, this amounts to 2% of the fetal health budget.
